Rockbound Pinot Noir

An imposing rock face dominates the lower portion of the famed Bien Nacido Vineyards, where shards of Monterey Shale can be found strewn among the vines. These quartz, sandstone and diatomic rocks impart a mineral-focused grace to wines grown here. In the cellar, we barrel ferment Rockbound Pinot Noir—uncommon for reds—to capture the unique quality of the lignified grape stems and seeds that arise from a long growing season. The result is a wine both supple and complex, offering a clear expression of its rugged site.

Palate

We aimed to make a Pinot that is electric and vibrant, yet delivers soft tannins and a subtle hint of fine French oak. This is a game of refinement with a twist, courtesy of barrel fermentation. The finished wine opens with aromas of raspberries, pomegranate seeds and quince paste. The nose reveals under layers of rose petals and violets, with hints of toast. Linear acidity in the mouth transitions to an elegant palate, with round, velvety tannins.

“The 2016 Rockbound Pinot Noir, from old blocks at Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Maria Valley, is a very pretty wine, with strawberry and cherry flavors, a hint of violets, and nice freshness.”
